Morgan's vision was to create a game that provided a balanced mix of physical exercise and enjoyment suitable for both men and women, all within an indoor setting. He aimed to bring the popularity of tennis indoors and combine it with the use of hands, similar to basketball.
Initially, Morgan improvised by suspending a tennis net on a basketball court, using a basketball as the game ball. Players on opposite sides would hit the ball over the net, much like a tennis rally. However, the compact size of an indoor basketball court posed challenges, as volleyball often went out of bounds.
To address these issues, Morgan introduced some crucial modifications. First, he altered the rule from allowing the ball to touch the ground before being returned to requiring continuous contact with the ball.
Second, the dimensions of the volleyball were adjusted, with the circumference standardized to 25-27 inches and the weight set between 225-340 grams.
