Summary: The iconic Lofoten Islands, known for dramatic landscapes and thrilling adventures.
Our first stop was the breathtaking Lofoten Islands. Picture towering mountains, white sand beaches, and picturesque fishing villages — it's like stepping into a postcard. We found that one of the best ways to explore Lofoten is by renting a bike and riding along the coast, soaking in the rugged scenery. A must-visit attraction is the Lofotr Viking Museum, where you can step back in time and experience Viking life. The museum is open daily from 10 AM to 6 PM, and tickets are priced at NOK 220 (about $20 USD). The highlight for us was trying our hand at Viking-style rowing — an unforgettable experience!
Summary: World’s strongest tidal current and an adventure for thrill-seekers.
We also made our way to Saltstraumen, home to the world's strongest tidal current. Watching the immense whirlpools swirl as the tide rushed in was both mesmerizing and thrilling. It’s a popular spot for fishing, and if you're into adventure, you can even join a RIB (rigid inflatable boat) safari to get a closer look at the action. These tours cost around NOK 800 (about $75 USD) and operate from April to September. Saltstraumen’s phenomenon is best viewed during high tide, so be sure to check the schedule beforehand to witness this natural spectacle at its peak.
Summary: Transportation, accommodation, and essential tips for a smooth trip.
Getting around Nordland is quite straightforward. We recommend taking the Hurtigruten coastal ferry for a scenic journey along the coast, which connects many of Nordland’s towns. For those planning to drive, renting a car is an excellent option as it allows you to explore at your own pace, especially in remote areas like Vesteralen. Accommodation-wise, you can stay in traditional rorbu cabins (fishermen’s cabins), which are cozy and often set against stunning coastal backdrops. Book early, especially during the peak summer months, to secure your spot.
Summary: Tasting local delicacies and discovering Nordland’s rich culture.
No trip to Nordland is complete without savoring some local delicacies. We tried klippfisk (dried cod) and grilled salmon, which were absolutely delicious and easy to find at local eateries. Visiting Bode, the region’s largest city, gave us a chance to explore museums, art galleries, and local markets. For those who love seafood, Bode has some of the freshest catches, with many local restaurants offering tasting platters at reasonable prices. Keep an eye out for festivals, especially during the summer, when the region comes alive with music and dance.
Summary: Essential packing advice to stay comfortable and prepared.
The weather in Nordland can be unpredictable, so we suggest packing layers. A waterproof jacket, a warm sweater, and comfortable hiking shoes are must-haves, no matter the season. Don’t forget to bring a power bank for your gadgets, especially if you plan to take lots of photos. It’s also smart to carry a reusable water bottle; the tap water is clean and safe to drink, so you can stay hydrated without buying plastic bottles.
