According to historical records, elephants have been human friends and can provide help to humans for a long time. From May to June 2020, hundreds of elephants died of unknown causes in the Okavango Delta of Botswana. Mark Healey, co-founder of National Park rescue, called the elephant death "one of the greatest disasters affecting elephants in this century".

Elephants are very smart. They can open fields and bury their dead companions among fallen leaves and dead branches. Elephants live a long life. They usually live to about 70 years old. They sexually mature between the ages of 10 and 15, and the pregnancy period is about 22 months. Elephants are widely distributed. About 40million years ago, all continents except Oceania and Antarctica had their footprints. However, now there are mainly two categories: Asian elephants and African elephants.

Elephants are gregarious animals, with the female as the leader and the family as the unit. The time, route, feeding place and habitat of daily activities are all under the command of the female. The adult male elephant only undertakes the responsibility of protecting the family safety. Sometimes several elephant herds gather to form a large group with hundreds of elephants.

Elephants inhabit a variety of habitats, especially in jungles, grasslands, and river valleys. They live on plants and eat a great deal, with a daily intake of more than 225 kg. Some elephants have been domesticated by humans. They are regarded as livestock and can be used for riding or labor. Ivory has always been regarded as a valuable carving material, and its price is high. Therefore, elephants have been wantonly and indiscriminately captured, which is one of the reasons for the sharp decline in their number.

Although elephants are pure vegetarians, they are the largest mammals on land and have long noses and teeth as weapons. Therefore, they have no natural enemies in nature except humans. But they can't see things at night, so they are easy to be attacked by lions at night.
