Our recent trip to Lake Tekapo was nothing short of magical. Nestled in the heart of New Zealand’s South Island, this stunning location offers a blend of natural beauty and unique experiences that left us awe-inspired.

Here’s a glimpse into our unforgettable journey and some must-see attractions you won’t want to miss!

Gazing at the Stars

One of the highlights of our visit was exploring the Lake Tekapo Stargazing experience. The night sky here is renowned for its clarity, and we were eager to witness the celestial splendour. We joined a stargazing tour at the Dark Sky Project, which operates from 9:00 PM to midnight, depending on the season. Tickets are priced at approximately NZD 129 ($80) per person. The experience included a guided tour of the night sky through powerful telescopes and informative commentary about the constellations and planets. As we looked up, we were treated to a breathtaking view of the Milky Way and distant galaxies—a truly humbling sight.

Soaking in the Hot Pools

During our stay, we also spent a relaxing afternoon at the Tekapo Springs. This attraction offers hot pools with stunning views of the surrounding mountains and lake. Tekapo Springs is open daily from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM, and tickets are around NZD 35 ($22) for a standard entry. We enjoyed soaking in the warm, mineral-rich waters while taking in the picturesque landscape. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploration and to appreciate the serene beauty of Lake Tekapo.

Local Delights

No trip is complete without indulging in local cuisine, and Lake Tekapo certainly delivered. We dined at the “Ramsay’s” café, known for its cozy atmosphere and delicious fare. We sampled their renowned lamb shanks and local fish dishes. The lamb shanks, cooked to perfection and served with seasonal vegetables, were a highlight, priced at around NZD 30 ($18). For a lighter option, we enjoyed the fresh fish and chips, which were both flavorful and satisfying at NZD 18 ($11).

Another delightful spot was “The Greedy Cow,” a charming eatery offering hearty meals and stunning views of the lake. Their homemade pies and burgers were a treat, with prices ranging from NZD 15 to NZD 25 ($9 to $15). The relaxed ambiance and friendly service made it a favorite among locals and tourists alike.

Lykkers, lake Tekapo is a destination that truly captures the essence of natural beauty and tranquility. Whether you’re stargazing under a pristine night sky or soaking in the rejuvenating hot pools, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Pair these experiences with the region’s delicious local food, and you have the perfect recipe for an unforgettable trip. We left Lake Tekapo with cherished memories and a newfound appreciation for the wonders of New Zealand.
