Rose is one of the important inspirations of poetry, painting, sculpture and other arts, and there are countless literary works involving rose. Whether in the West or the East, rose has long gone beyond the field of Botany and become a cultural symbol with complex connotation.
In the west, the mark of "Rose culture" can be seen everywhere. Researchers have found designs with roses as the theme in ancient Greek architectural decoration, coins, and murals on Crete. In the literary works handed down by some ancient Greek poets, the rose is given the color of myth. It is said that the rose is transformed from the blood of the God of love and the God of abundance and is a gift from the gods.
During the Roman Empire, roses symbolized high morality and rewards for meritorious deeds. But in the decline of the Roman Empire, the rose became a symbol of evil and a luxury that ruined many rich and powerful families. In the 19th century, a silver rose was used as a symbol of love in European aristocratic society. The person who passed this token of love was called the "Rose Knight". Until modern society, sending roses to each other on Valentine's day to express love has become a ritual.
Roses are deeply loved by Europeans. One of the representative figures is Josephine, Queen of Napoleon, the first emperor of France. Josephine gathered breeder DuPont and other botanists to establish the largest and most complete rose garden in the world at that time - Mermason rose garden in the Mermason castle on the outskirts of Paris. The rose garden has collected and planted about 250 species and more than 30000 roses, including many world-famous varieties. In 1789, the planting and cultivation of roses in Mermason rose garden had begun to take shape. Joseph Redwood, a painter of flower atlas, was warmly invited by Josephine. He spent 20 years drawing the world's first rose atlas. It contains most of the rose varieties in the Mermason rose garden, including ancient wild roses (French roses), medieval roses (white roses) and various rose types introduced from Asia.
Roses are never lack of people who love them. A rose can be seen as organization and life in the eyes of botanists, or romance, and love in the eyes of lovers, or profit and value in the eyes of economists, or the root and evolution of national civilization in the eyes of historians and archaeologists. After all, there are a thousand Roses in a thousand people's eyes.
